Synopsis
Singin' in the Rain brings to the stage one of the best loved MGM Film Musicals of all time. The story concerns a period of historical time in the 1920's just as silent movies were about to be replaced by the 'talkies'; a period of intense excitement and optimism in the Hollywood hills - its authors, Betty Comden and Adolf Green, were themselves an active part of this scene.
The musical numbers are chosen to capture the atmosphere of these times; blockbusters such as the title song, Make 'em Laugh, Good Mornin', Broadway Melody, You Were Meant For Me, You are My Lucky Star and many more.
Running through the piece is the love story of Don - a silent movie idol - and Kathy who is a dancing girl on the studio set and her rivalry with Lina Lamont who is Don's film leading lady. The sub text is that Lina just does not have a voice that will be suitable for the 'talkies'; a very realistic dilemma faced by the film studios at the time.
Singin' in the Rain is full of timeless humour as the studio somewhat over-ambitiously attempts to make not just a talking picture but a talking musical and the show delights us with its unsurpassed musical comedy dance routines, made famous on film by Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds. You can be assured that LADOS will do its level best to capture on stage the sheer exuberance of these routines.
